I found the site through opencarry.org and a desire to learn how to carry through the state of Iowa while on vacation.
What I think I have learned ... my Missouri CCW is not honored, I can carry open EXCEPT in a car!
Please, someone explain to me ... how do I get across/through Iowa with a handgun while on vacation?
Is it possible to get a "travel permit" or do I just have to unload and stow where not available?
Thanks for the help!

Welcome to Iowa Carry Don.

At the present time, no you CAN NOT carry, open, concealed, in a vehicle or otherwise unless you have a valid Iowa permit to carry weapons, your Missouri permit is not recognized in Iowa and will not be until January 1st 2011. Unfortunately until then if you transport it into Iowa it must be unloaded and enclosed in a container to large to conceal on your body; pistol rug, hard case, 5 gallon bucket, etc.

kk0g is correct on the current Iowa law. If you are not a member of MissouriCarry.com, please feel free to join. I live close to the Iowa border and post a bunch of Iowa info on MissouriCarry.

I found Iowa Carry through a close friend from Cedar Rapids, Perry Bockhaus, who passed away too early and unexpectedly a few years ago. He was a member here, an NRA member and also served our country in the military. I had more of a cursory interest in the site and actual cause initially, but after his passing I thought this would be one of a couple ways I could honor his friendship. Since then it's become more of a real personal cause for me and have become more and more involved in writing representatives and encouraging people to support the change. I really don't get to any actual Iowa Carry events, but I'd like to change that in the upcoming years.

Please join us at a future event. There are a bunch of good people here at IowaCarry. I lived in the Cedar Rapids area for a number of years.

When I found out that IowaCarry was partnered with the NRA-ILA in getting Iowa's laws changed to "shall issue", I decided to check you guys out. I first heard of your organization when I read a quote in the paper by one of your representatives concerning the passage of the new law. Before that, I didn't know you existed.

Hi everyone! I was told about IC by Absit, who has been a member/moderator since the very beginning.

I am so very happy to see such an excellent site like this. I'm glad you folks are here.

I live in Bettendorf and have wanted a CCP for quite some time. I've spend a lifetime developing my hobby of firearms. I'm no expert, but I can hold my own and have been shooting since I've been about 8 or 9 years old.

I'm very protection-oriented and firmly believe in our God-given rights, especially our right to defend ourselves against those who would harm us.

I hope to learn much here and hopefully contribute at some point.

Hi.
I found the site (don't remember how, perhaps a link from a reloaders' site ) right around the time the new law was signed. . . maybe a week before. My wife and I are both interested in having the "option" to carry if we deem it "appropriate". I have found the threads here very educational. We will be taking the Sheriff's class in October (Washington County) and applying for permits in Jan. One of the things I sincerely appreciate in reading the posts here is the levelheadedness that generally permeates the forum.

Thank you for your part in changing "may" to "shall" in Iowa.

Chuck
