Opening up a new store

Guys and Gals, I am thinking of switching my businesses to pawn as it is more universally accepted than what I am currently doing plus I can merge my pawn business in with my check-cashing and ebay businesses. I am going through the motions like the licensing, jewelry classes, acquiring inventory, software, insurance etc. etc. I know many of you have extensive backgrounds in the two areas I am lacking: Gun Store Operations, and anti-robbery/burglary measures. I just bought a TRTL30x6 Jewelers safe which will stand up to signifigant attack and weighs over 3000lbs. Full UL-tested and rated 24/7 alarm system. Burglarbomb pepper spray system so that if someone were to break in after hours they would get the surprise of a lifetime! I want to layout the store with cash windows similar to what you see on "Hardcore Pawn," with all cash transactions being conducted behind level II Glass. We're securing a vault room with bandit traps, motion detection, vibration detection, glass breaks, the works. All access to secure areas is going to be controlled by Steel reinforced coded doors. I am looking at a double-door system with magnetic remote controlled door locks to prevent "Push in," or "Run out," robberies. Also going to bar all doors and windows. Concrete pillars in the parking lot to prevent drive in smash and grabs. Hold up and panic alarms all over the store and additional motion detection and glass breaks. Considering 16-64 Camera DVR Surveillance system with multiple terrabytes of data storage to record months worth of footage. Parking lot and every corner of the store monitored. SIgnifigant lighting. Also considering a kick switches to turn off the lights in the event of an armed robbery so that if it were to occur the attackers would find themselves suddenly in a no-low light environment. Establishing dual-control procedures for all employees to prevent fraud or embezzelment. Always going to have multiple employees opening and closing the store with "All Clear," procedures to prevent push ins.

Now to the good stuff...Lol. Keeping an 870 in the cash cage with turkey loads. Probably a nice AR in the back office and an additional shotgun out on the floor. Considering a good .45 for myself. I know....1911 Guys, but I was thinking Glock 30 or something similar? I will expect some of my employees to carry as well or at least know where our guns are and how to use them if something bad were to happen. Recommendations on the .45 anyone? Same thing on the AR?

Gun Store Operations: I know I can't expect to learn everything in a week but when I got into coin-dealing and Check-Cashing there were a few "Become a Coin Dealer," and "Open a Check Cashing Business," DVD's and courses out there I took. Nothing will fully prepare you but does anyone know of anything out there which can provide some "Training Wheels," for me?

Also with security ideas if anyone else thinks there is a base I don't have covered I'd love to hear it?

Mauser Trigger

All you guys with Mauser actions on your rifles, maybe you can help me out here.

I got this rifle with a Mauser action from my Father several years ago. I have shot it a few times but had some problems with the trigger. I never got up the gumption, until now, to take a serious look at what the problem might be.

Last night, all gumption-ed up, I took apart the gun and took a serious look at the trigger mechanism. After thoroughly exploring it, I think I understand now how the trigger works. The whole trigger housing sort of rocks freely on a pivot to allow the trigger sear to rock out of the way as the bolt is opened and the gun is cocked. There is a set screw on the trigger that limits the amount of rocking movement on the other side of the pivot pin. It seems to me that my problem stems from the free rocking of the trigger housing. I think there should be some sort of return pressure possibly in the form of a spring on or near that set screw I mentioned to force the sear back into position in order to catch the striker. Is there supposed to be a spring that provides back pressure for that rocking motion, or, as Jan says, am I smoking my socks?

Any help would be appreciated.

M1 Carbine Question

I am the proud owner of my grandfather's M1 carbine from WW2.

It is an absolutely gorgeous gun, but it has several issues that prevent me from firing it.

The first is, it fires surplus rounds the best but still has at least one ftf per mag, but it stovepipes a live round every other shot with modern ammo. After some poking, prodding and Q&A with my dad on it, I have narrowed it down to weak magazine springs. It turns out that they sat, fully loaded, for the better part of the last 60 years. Some were still wrapped in the oiled paper and loaded with the original rounds from their day of issue. I plan on getting some modern mags with new springs and just mothballing the originals. I also suspect the main spring of being a bit loose but I want to try one solution at a time.

The second issue is the rear sight. According to my father, my grandfather used to beable to call out a twig the thickness of his pinky, then split it in two, open sighted, at 100 yards. I, however, have yet to have this chance since the rear sight assembly will pop out of the channel into your hand with the lightest touch. I would hate to use even a drop of loctite in the channel unless I have to, given its age and sentimental value, but I don't know how else to keep it in place.

Any ideas?

I am comfortable with the operation and maintenance, just really have no experience with the larger "AR-10" size rifles.

I understand Armalite was the original, and yes I know dpms makes them. Those that own dpms please take no offense, but dpms just isn't for me for whatever reason.

I don't need perfect 1200 yd accuracy or really any huge bench rester's dream. I want something a little more accurate than my RRA bullet hose though. Flat top upper to take a scope, no carry handle. Nice trigger either factory or after market. Barrel maybe 18"-20". Twist rate: I'm totally in the dark yet on the .308 caliber and bullet weight vs. Twist there. But I will load for it, so whatever let's me play around. At precent, it looks like I will have it in 2 weeks to a month (It is on layaway and getting paid off next Friday, at which time the order will be placed and God knows how long that will take since most places seem to be out of stock currently).

Since this is going to be my first AR, I had a few questions on overall cleaning and maintenance as well as a couple of parts.

So when it comes to AR lubrication, I understand that they like to run wet but is it generally better to use primarily oil or grease?
It seems to me that grease might collect more grime and crud so I am leaning toward oil, but I am not sure if there is a better performance from grease once it flows a bit better at the high receiver temps in a DI rifle.

When cleaning after a shooting session (I clean after each outing, it eats at me to let a gun sit dirty) how often does one need to swab the gas tube and what parts need to be cleaned the most often aside from the bolt/carrier?

Gear wise I am planning to pick up a BCM gunfighter charging handle and a BAD lever from Bravo Company. Does anyone have any experience with these?

10/22 accurizing

My 10/22 has a factory standard 16" barrel, Hogue over-molded stock, factory receiver, full Volquartsen trigger guard, and factory receiver-mounted rail. Scope is Simmons Whitetail Classic 6.5-20x 50mm Adjustable Objective.

At 50 yards on the bench I have a really tough time keeping the groups around 2.5" consistantly. I am wondering if it is just me, if the stock is causing problems with pressure on the barrel, or I need to upgrade the barrel. I was looking at barrels and the Volquartsen barrels caught my eye but they are quite expensive. Was wondering if the Green Mountain stainless 20" .920 barrel is a good barrel or if there were any other recommendation. Also is 1:16 normal for .22LR? I also have a standard factory wood stock I just purchased from a member here if the Hogue stock needs to go.

Any suggestions? Watched a couple videos online and it seems like the barrel is fairly simple to replace by myself, is there anything particular I would need to do to ensure correct installation and alignment? If I choose to install a new barrel is something like the Tactical Solutions V-Block worth purchasing?

Thanks for any comments and suggestions.
-Drew

I have rediscovered the .22 long rifle round, due to the increasing cost of ammunition, and I have to say the journey back has been amazing.

I already had an accurate .22 in a CZ 452 Mannlicher, which has never failed to bring back a rabbit every time I go out.

Then, I got a CMMG conversion kit for my AR which is amazing.

Now, I picked up a Ruger 22/45 from Mike at Controlled Chaos Arms today, to make my pistol practice more affordable. After putting several magazines through it, trouble free, I am again impressed by how fun and useful the venerable .22 long rifle round is for training purposes.

And this piece is incredibly reliable and accurate. Mine is a Mark III 5.5 inch heavy barrel. I am extremely impressed by its abilities to put lead on target and not so impressed with my own skill level.

All in all a very cheap way to spend an afternoon training.

CMMG AR .22 lr adapter and magazine

I just picked up a used CMMG .22 lr adapter for my CCA/Daniel Defense AR build.

It's a CCA lower with DD internals, 14.5 inch pinned muzzle device upper, PSA bolt (normally) and Magpul furniture, running an Aimpoint H1 on a DD high mount, for those who care about that stuff.

Bottom Line Up Front; this is the best $180 someone can spend, which you will probably save in the first shooting session or two for the cost of ammo.

The CMMG adapter kit with one magazine is available at Bass Pro Shops for $180, btw.

I received the kit yesterday, and just cycled some .22 rounds through it to see how it functioned. Initially, had some FTF because the magazine rattles around a bit in the flared CCA lower magwell, which relatively generous dimensions is a positive, in a "real" 5.56 gun. Unfortunately, the CMMG adapter magazine is a touch small, and the feed angle is dependent on angle of the feed lips. So I built up the magazine with some duct tape and it cycled like a sewing machine, by hand.

Cut to this morning. I go to the range, and load it up to 10 rounds, and all 10 feed through with boring regularity, hitting at POA of my red dot, which is set for 5.56mm NATO. A very pleasant surprise. With the cheapest possible ammo (Rem Golden Bullet 550 pack, which is available at Wal-Mart for 3.7 cents a round, I am able to put all my rounds into a 25 meter NRA pistol target from 25 meters, both standing and prone. That is more than I hoped for, accuracy-wise.

Then, as an experiment, I removed the duct tape from the magazine and "Voila!" the magazine self-stabilized under normal cyclic action from the adapter, and still ran like the proverbial top. The FTFs only occurred while hand cycling the action.

Installing the kit is stone cold stupid simple. Just replace the stock BCG with the adapter. Then insert the .22 adapter magazine. That's it. The only thing that changes with your carbine is the length of pull of the charging handle.

Now, the adapter gets filthy fast, so make sure you use lots of lubricant on that puppy and it will just wipe down. As is my usual, I blew it out with non-chlorinated brake cleaner available at $2.97 at Wal-Mart and called it clean.

I can finally shoot as much as I want to. Finally. Now that I have the adapter installed, I am going to start setting up a portable target range I can use wherever I can shoot. I cannot believe it took me this long to finally get one.

Now, I cannot wait for my Ruger 22/45 to show up to Mike's so I can have a full .22 lr rig to work on my long-neglected marksmanship and tactical shooting skills.

PSA AR buy

Of course the lower is going to be registered to him by my FFL friend, but he doesnt know squat about ARs and asked me to find him one. I'm about 2 days away from setting him up with this from Palmetto State Armory, based on the suggestion of 120 MM, who I trust knows good stuff from junk.

http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/p...m4-upper-1.html

Adding the charging handle, BCG and rear sight.

http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/c...ic-edition.html

My question is what about twist rate? This upper says it is 1:7 and Ive seen 1:8 and 1:9 on other barrels. I'm assuming that they perform best with specific bullet weights, as I've read that 1:9 is best for heavier bullets.

Things to consider; he also wants a .22 conversion BCG, not a problem, and I suspect that he will shoot .22 more than anything. Actually he started out asking about .22 ARs and I told him to go with a 5.56 and the conversion. You know, 2 rifles are always better than 1... He also originally wanted a ".223" and I suggested he go with the 5.56. Never know when there might be extra ammo laying around loaded in mags for you..... so if 1:7 is best for lighter loads, that wont be an issue. I see him shooting MAYBE 100 rounds and leaving it set up as .22 for the most part.

So, 120MM, am I doing good? He buys and sells alot of guns, but its limited to high value revolvers and shotguns. I am happy to break him into the "assault rifle" world, (he shot my AK 74 and loved it), but I really want his purchase to make him come back for more...

Jason

*BTW wouldnt have a coupon code handy would you??

I bought a 1911 drum mag

I just bought a 1911 drum magazine for my pistol.I decided to try them a 2nd.time. Worked great with my pistol.Ball ammo worked best, and Hornaday HP ammo fed real well also. I did have to take a diamond stone to the feed lips just a little, and it worked better.some wire edges were on it.After I did that, the magazine worked great.
